On may 21, a man with a bat and a mask on his face entered the Shirley Express convenience store about 65 miles east of New York City, and came up to the owner, dropped the bat and fell to the floor.  The man “started crying like a baby”.  While on the floor, he confessed he was just a poor man trying to feed his family.  The owner showed mercy, and let the man leave with $40 and a loaf of bread, which the would-be robber did not take.  This happened twice in the same store, the second time, the would-be robber asked for forgiveness and to be converted to Muslim.

My Documentary Experience

I enjoyed creating my essay, because it required the information to sink in, so I wasn’t just creating a essay off of a random information source, I was actually learning.  Also, since I am such a computer guy, I loved working with iLife ‘08, because of it’s new media browser sharing mechanism.  And, there’s more, I loved the project in general, because it is straightforward work, and there is no part of it that is just work for the sake of work.

Although, I was constantly frustrated working with my group.  I cannot deny that there were times that they were not doing any work, and times that I was the one not focusing.  In the end I decided to split up with my group, and ended up fine.

My opinion about the Jews generally remained unchanged.  I went in with an open mind, and never doubted them because I am not of their religion.  I have always known that Judaism had a reason for their beliefs, and I just took that knowlege into further depth.  Although, I do not believe I would make more documentaries about them in the future, because I believe that I can go on with only a general idea of the events in their history.

As I stated, I believe this was two sided, but I wasted more time getting my groupmates to focus than I put time into working.  And, as I also stated, I split up with them, and found later that it was a good decision, and I am more than satisfied with the finished product.  I also discovered that I have a career as a professional narrator in the recording process.

If I had to create another documentary, I would likely create it about the Egyptians, to learn about their side of the Jews’ history.

By writing my own rubric, I taught myself very well how to set expectations, and to show myself in black and white the consequences of procrastination and not putting effort into my work.

I wish I could say better, although I split up with my group rather late, and only had one week to start from scratch and finish my project, without letting my grade suffer.  I can’t say much other than I will never procrastinate again.

As I also stated, this is a very good way to learn about the history of the Jews, or any topic, because you can learn very much from it as well as teach others what you learned.

CSL Weekly Call to Action 6/7

When the movie Slumdog Millionaire was made, the young actor from a slum in India returned home.  He didn’t return home to home.  Soon after his arrival back at the Slum, the entire slum was bulldozed, without any warning ahead of time, and the same  happened to twelve other slums.  Although, the cons of the new digs may outweigh the pros.  The Shinde family from one of the twelve bulldozed slums was promised a new life in a high rise.  A high rise yes, but a new life, well, no.  The high rise was in much better condition than the slum, but harder because of the several flights of stairs.  The father couldn’t manage to go up the flights of stairs whenever he went down, push came to shove, he couldn’t go down to manage his business, no income, going for days without water, on and on.  And, there is no alternative, thanks to the Indian government bulldozing the Shinde family slum.  A very unfortunate turn of events for the Shinde family.

This article, “Homeless Soccer Team Roots for New Life”, is about a team of soccer players, each with degrees from adequate colleges and most working at The Royal Bank of Canada.  Although, the one thing they all share, their home address: 1 Wards Island; a homeless shelter.  Lawrence Cann, a former nationally ranked soccer player at Davidson College, thought up the idea to gather homeless people to play soccer.  He went to 1 Wards Island, and talked to people.  He told them when, where and why, and that they would not regret going.  And regret it they did not.  Of the amazing turnout of thirty people, only six didn’t go a second time.  He established rules to the attendees in English and Spanish.  You cannot play if you are drunk or high, and between running, passing and shooting, you have to talk to the coach about your goals outside of soccer.  That includes your job search, your goals, and your state of mind.  It was time for an opponent.  Lawrence began contacting Chelsea Piers, and with the “help” of the bad economy, got up on their waiting list.  Then, as the rest of the pieces fell into place, they collected equipment from Nike, and matching jerseys from Chelsea Piers, they had their debut game.  A rough couple of first games, apparently not so rough; Dexter Burnett, after losing his second game, started talking to an opponent, asking him if he was hiring.

This article covers the topic of bankruptcy and car manufacturers, mainly Chrysler.  Chrysler just filed for bankruptcy, and expects 1,000 dealerships to go out of business as an effect of the restructuring plan.  I do have a couple of quotes to share from this article.  “We bite our tongues and say, can you be more realistic?  A lot of people hear the word bankruptcy and think worst-case scenario. They think Circuit City. That’s, of course, not the case here.”  Also, “I always say to customers, Buy an American car and help the U.S. economy.  Plus, American cars have more cup holders. They have cup holders everywhere.’ ” Mr. Asghari said.  President Barack Obama said himself, and this is a fact not an opinion, that buying an American-made car helps the economy.

P.S. I found an article about cars to show the different aspects and effects of this economic pitfall we are in the midst of climbing out of.

Myths Script

Our myths script is, as most others, completely ready for recording.  We have finished our storyboard, as well as our script, and edited all the way through.  There is not much else to say.

So far, I have finished my parts in our essay, edited the entire essay and created the iMovie project.  I am currently working on collecting voiceovers for our documentary to begin, and editing the Ken Burns effects and volumes (reducing background noise and improving quality.)  We are on schedule, although we may need to meet out of school hours to get more recording completed.

Thank You, Rob

Thank you for supporting me in math.  I went into a slump, and you pulled me out.  You have been able to create a perfect balance of seriousness and laughter to the classroom.  You have taught me very well how to go on my own without having to rely on the teacher for everything.  That is a life skill that one cannot live without.  I am easily ready to move on because of you, and now with a skill I didn’t even touch on before, self piloting.  Thank you, Rob.

P.S. I think you are hesitant.  Don’t be.  I actually like to be called Teddy Wisk.  Feel free, whenever you call on me, to say that.

Some of The Kinder Planets

Tim Wynn-Jones, the author of the book Some of The Kinder Planets, expressed his very unique writing style in this book.  In this book, he would express a point in a way that nobody else could just think up.  Here is one analogy, The Simpsons.  Tim Wynn-Jones has a mind similar to that of the creators of the show The Simpsons, in the way that he thinks of what he wants to happen, and works backward.  Tim will create events up to what he wants to happen, and those events shape the rest of the story.  I have heard and/or read many stories similar to this writing style, but none have hit the mark that he did with this book of short stories.  He has also connected each story in a logical way.  Each story its own, yet leading up to the next.  For example, he may continue on a generally similar topic, although with new characters, new locations and a new situation.
